June 20, 2015 marked the 40 year anniversary of the Family Health Centers of Georgia.   The organization has grown over the past 40 years from one location to seven service locations, including the first school-based health center in Fulton County, the first school-based health center to be located within a high school in the Georgia, and a 41 ft. state-of-the-art mobile medical and dental unit.  Staff has grown to more than 100 board certified or board eligible physicians, physican assistants, registered nurses, dental providers, behavioral health specialists, and supporting staff.  The organization's executive leadership team has more than 100 years of combined business, healthcare management, finance, operations and administrative experience. 

August of 2013 was another monumental time as the Board of Directors made the bold move to rebrand the organization from West End Medical Centers to The Family Health Centers of Georgia, Inc. The organization’s new vision aims to expand healthcare to communities beyond that of the historic West End community. The Board’s focus on increasing brand awareness of affordable healthcare for the entire family is in an effort to reach diverse populations throughout Fulton, Cobb and the metropolitan Atlanta area.

Beginning in 1975

Original BuildingFrom its modest beginnings in 1975 of just eight exam rooms to its modern grandeur of more than 70 exams rooms, The Family Health Centers of Georgia, Inc. has been providing world-class healthcare services, coupled with compassionate and courteous customer service, to the metropolitan Atlanta area for more than three decades. While the Main Center’s address has remained the same at 868 York Avenue, the organization has now gone through two official name changes, starting out as the University Center – Community Health Plans, Inc. from 1975 through 1992 then changing to West End Medical Centers, Inc. from 1992 to July 2013. Expanding from its humble 12,000 square-foot facility, the beautifully updated main center now boasts a 41,000 square-foot state-of-the-art healthcare center with 41 exam rooms, which include dental operatories and a full service pharmacy.

The Family Health Centers of Georgia provides healthcare services to more than 22,000 patients annually, generating 50,000 patient visits. Not only has the space increased, the number of services and programs offered have nearly doubled, ensuring that the organization provides the necessary medical interventions and treatments for its vast plethora of patients.

Growing the program

Center HistoryFrom 1979 to 2010, Mrs. Daisy L. Harris, who served as President & CEO, led her team with a focus on ensuring that the organization not only provided top-notch healthcare services, but also offered high-quality medical programs as well as community outreach and health education. Aiding in the organization’s successful longevity was the guidance from Dr. Mirian E. Chivers, the first Medical Director, who later served as Chair of the Board of Directors. Working closely together for more than 20 years, Mrs. Harris and Dr. Chivers implemented many of the best practices that enable the organization to continue to reach its full potential.

2010

In August of 2010, the highly qualified Dr. Michael W. Brooks, M.D., MBA became President & CEO. Dr. Brooks brought with him a wealth of knowledge and experience from his previous positions within the organization including Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Brooks’ impressive list of prior accomplishments includes successfully negotiating and overseeing the organization’s managed care contracts with the state’s community management organizations. Dr. Brooks managed the organization’s information technology initiatives, which included developing and implementing the organization’s first IT network. Dr. Brooks also oversaw the implementation of the organization’s first computerized practice management system and the implementation of electronic health records. Dr. Brooks also supervised the organization’s Clinical Administration Department, which included all medical and dental staff, all clinical departments, social services, case management, and the health education department.

Dr. Brooks continues to lead the organization in increasing access to affordable healthcare and in achieving positive health outcomes. The Family Health Centers of Georgia has maintained accreditation by The Joint Commission since 2010. In 2012, the organization became the first community health center in Georgia, and the second in the Southeast, to be accredited by The Joint Commission as a Primary Care Medical Home.  Under Dr. Brooks' leadership, FHCGA received its designation as "Recognized - Level 3 on Achievement of Recognition for Systematic use of Patient-Centered, Coordinated Care Management Processes" from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) in 2014.
